This year I did something I had been dreaming to do for years—I became an Aerialist (think Cirque du Soleil —if you’ve never seen a Cirque show, I highly recommend it!).
The 1st time I saw Cirque du Soleil I was mesmerized and had the thought “I’d love to do that” but never knew “civilians” could learn how.
After seeing a school for it, I googled it & realized it was only 10 minutes from my house.
I thought about taking a class but decided to put it off until I moved, which at that point was pending but wasn’t definite. My thought process was “I don’t want to get into it if I know I’ll be leaving soon.”
My sister-in-law, Lydia, challenged me on my B.S. story and asked, “why put off doing something you’ve wanted to do for years when you can do it now? When you move you can find a different studio to go to.”
Me: Sigh…you are right Lydia, Why wait? I immediately went home & registered for a class.
It is rarely the facts that hold us back from our dreams but is IS always the stories we choose to believe about “why not” that prevent us from accomplishing our dreams.
After that first class I was HOOKED! I felt so strong, so feminine and couldn’t stop smiling.
Because of my work/travel schedule at the time I was only able to take maybe 4 or 5 classes at that studio before I moved in May to Charlotte, NC and one of the first things I looked for in my new location was an Aerial studio.
Fortunately for me, I found Aerial CLT and have been addicted ever since.
In November the studio had a student showcase (think kids recital but for adults) that I decided to audition for because I knew it would increase my aerial skills in a major way.
There were a bunch of stories that tried to stop me from auditioning.
Growing up I NEVER did dance, ballet, gymnastics so I had no idea what I was doing….I had no idea how to choreograph a piece or how to make it beautiful….I’m not comfortable performing in front of others….I wasn’t as good as everyone else….I was probably oldest person performing…blah, blah, blah…story, story, story…
I was literally on Skype with a friend the night before BAWLING my eyes out threatening to jump in front of a train to get out of auditioning (I may be a coach, but I’m human too!).
Fortunately, I didn’t jump in front of a train, I “passed” the auditions (YIKES!) and then worked my A** off for the next 5 weeks.
There were many private lessons, pools of tears, a plethora of bruises, and lots of sore muscles BUT I kept my focus on my outcome (to create a piece that was feminine, light and grateful) and who I would become in the process (an aerialist vs. someone who takes aerial classes).
Truth be told, I was given the title of “flight risk” because my teachers thought I wouldn’t show up (no one can ever accuse me of being quiet about my feelings!).
Despite all of those things, I did it because I was so focused on my outcome, rather than the roadblocks that were in front of me.
It was an AMAZING experience; I am totally hooked on performing!
I loved every second of it and…and despite a MAJOR mess up during dress rehearsal that caused me to change up a bit of what I did during the performance (that’s part of what happens when we work towards our goals, we have to be flexible and change things at times to reach our outcome), I DID IT and am so grateful that I did!
Sooo….I’d love to share it with you with the hopes that it may inspire you to make some of your dreams you’ve had for a while come true.
Here’s the link to my performance if you’d like to watch it (just click on the picture):
As you watch it, I invite you to think about one of the dreams you’ve been putting of and the stories you have that are holding you back from making it come true and write them down.
Next, write down all of the ways you can find solutions to make your dreams come true and start taking action towards your dreams!
And, if you feel like you need some help around that, that’s what I’m here for.
Feel free to set up a Breakthrough Strategy Session where we can talk about what’s holding you back and how to help you get where you want to go–just click on the pink words to schedule a time to talk!
